In the Mayan culture there are many legends and one of the best known is that of Tzukán, the serpent in charge of caring for and protecting the cenotes.
The ancient legend tells that of all the snakes that inhabited the Earth, Tzukán, protector of caves and cenotes, was unique for its great size and mysticism.
According to the story told by the Mexican Government, Tzukán became the guardian of the cenotes during the first drought of the Mayan Empire.
On the same page she tells how she was designated by Chaac, God of rain, to protect the caves and cenotes for all eternity.
At first, this reptile refused to fulfill its mission to ensure that the cenotes never run out of water, but Chaac launched himself against the animal so that it would never leave these territories considered sacred in the Mayan culture.
